Tragedy in Ahmedabad: A Pilot's last promise, a family's loss

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad claimed 241 lives, including Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who recently vowed to quit flying to care for his elderly father, and First Officer Clive Kunder, whose family had strong ties to actor Vikrant Massey. Captain Sabharwal, 55, with over 8,300 hours of experience, had promised his father he would quit his job to care for him full-time. Kunder, 28, came from an aviation family - his mother was a former Air India flight attendant. The flight, AI-143 to London's Gatwick Airport, crashed 32 seconds after takeoff. Captain Sabharwal issued a "Mayday" call moments before contact was lost. The sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, is recovering in the hospital. Ahmedabad : An Air India Flight (AI171) has crashed in the Meghani area near  Ahmedabad  Airport  in Gujarat. Visuals from  PTI  showed thick smoke rising from the crash site. CNN-News18   reports that there were   242 people on board the aircraft.  Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, head of India's directorate of civil aviation, told the Associated Press that the plane crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar. There were 232 passengers and 12 crew members on board, where 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britishers, 1 Canadian and 7 Portuguese nationals were boarded.
